The Department of State Services (DSS) has threatened legal action against Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Channels Television over their reports alleging the agency’s involvement in the Lagos State House of Assembly crisis.
Describing the reports as false and malicious, the DSS, through its legal representative, Adedeji Adedipe (SAN), accused the stations of misrepresenting its role during the tense situation on February 17, 2025, linked to the possible return of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Adedipe clarified that the DSS was only providing security support and had not engaged in any unlawful activity. He further demanded an immediate retraction of the reports and a public apology to be aired across all platforms for three consecutive days.
The letter, dated February 17, stated, “Your publication and/or broadcast has greatly injured the character of our client and tarnished its esteemed image before the public.”
It also warned that failure to comply within seven days would result in both civil and criminal legal action under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act.
The DSS insists that the media houses must adhere to journalistic ethics and ensure balanced reporting to avoid misleading the public.
