The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, on Saturday, commenced the burial rites of his late mother, Iyoba Omo N’ Ikuoyemwen, Iyoba Ewuare II, with traditional ceremonies (Iwarinnwin).
The rites, which will last for 14 days, are being conducted at Eguae Iyoba N’ Uselu, by 5 Junction in Benin. This event is significant as it is taking place 49 years after her passing.
According to Benin tradition, the burial of an Iyoba (Queen Mother) can only be performed after the Crown Prince, who was then the Edaiken, ascends the throne.
The funeral rites, running until March 27, will feature various traditional activities, culminating in the grand Ekasa ceremony at the Oba’s Palace.
As the chief mourner, Oba Ewuare II will lead the procession, accompanied by his chiefs, palace officials, and dignitaries, making offerings to his mother’s spirit for blessings and protection.
During this period, the use of traditional coral beads is suspended within the palace and the kingdom, in line with established customs.
