A revered leader of Afenifere and a staunch advocate of Awoism, Pa Ayo Adebanjo passed away at the age of 96 on February 14, 2025. Known for his unwavering commitment to democracy and restructuring, he was a key figure in Nigerian politics for decades.

Beyond his public persona, here are eight lesser-known facts about the elder statesman:

  1. He Started as a Zikist
    Before aligning with Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Adebanjo was a follower of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. In 1943, he joined the Zikist movement but later switched allegiance in 1951 to the Action Group, where he became a staunch advocate of Awoism.
  2. He Fled to Ghana to Escape Persecution
    In 1962, during the political crisis that led to the trial of Awolowo and other Action Group leaders, Adebanjo was among those accused of treasonable felony. To avoid persecution, he fled to Ghana, where he lived in exile for some time.
  3. His Father Was Arrested Due to His Activism
    Following his escape to Ghana, the Nigerian government arrested and detained Adebanjo’s father as a means of intimidation. However, this did not deter him from his political struggle.
  4. He Maintained a Strict Fitness Routine
    Even in his later years, Adebanjo followed a rigorous daily exercise regimen, including aerobic sessions, to maintain his health.
  5. He Was a Founding Member of NADECO
    Adebanjo played a crucial role in forming the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which spearheaded the fight against military dictatorship in the 1990s after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election won by Chief MKO Abiola.
  6. He Was Arrested Multiple Times for His Beliefs
    Throughout his political career, Adebanjo was arrested and detained on several occasions due to his firm stance on democracy and good governance. Despite the risks, he never backed down.
  7. He Remained True to Awoism
    While many of his peers switched political affiliations over time, Adebanjo remained steadfast in his belief in Awoism, which emphasized free education, free healthcare, rural development, and federalism.
  8. He Was a Media-Savvy Intellectual
    A journalist before becoming a lawyer, Adebanjo was articulate and fearless in media engagements. He was known for his candid opinions and blunt approach to national issues.
