The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed allegations questioning the legality of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun’s continued stay in office, describing them as baseless and misleading.
In a statement released on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police asserted that such claims were unfounded and aimed at undermining both the legitimacy of the IGP’s appointment and public confidence in the force.
The allegations originated from activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, who had, in a series of social media posts, alleged that Egbetokun was occupying the position illegally, as his tenure had purportedly expired.
However, the police countered this assertion, citing legal provisions that support the IGP’s appointment. According to the statement, Egbetokun’s tenure is in line with the Police Act, 2020 (as amended), specifically PART III, Section 7(6), which stipulates that “The person appointed to the office of the Inspector-General of Police shall hold office for four years.”
Furthermore, the police emphasized that Egbetokun’s appointment was duly ratified by the Police Council and officially confirmed by the Presidency. His tenure, the statement clarified, runs from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027, in accordance with Section 8A of the amended Police Act.
The amendment, the police explained, was introduced to ensure stability in the leadership of the force, allowing the IGP to implement long-term strategies without the risk of abrupt termination. This continuity, they added, is crucial for maintaining law and order across the country.
Reiterating the legitimacy of Egbetokun’s position as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police, the police condemned the claims as an attempt to sow confusion and erode public trust in the force.
The statement further warned against the spread of false information, stressing that such actions could undermine national security efforts. It urged individuals and groups to refrain from disseminating misleading narratives and instead contribute to constructive discussions that support law enforcement in safeguarding lives and property.
