Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has dismissed claims that he was sent to Paris, France, to testify against former Minister of Power, Olu Agunloye, in the ongoing arbitration over the controversial $6 billion Mambilla Power Project.
According to Premium Times, Obasanjo clarified that his decision to appear before the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Court of Arbitration was entirely voluntary. He stated that neither President Bola Tinubu nor any government official influenced his participation.
“I volunteered myself to testify in this case. Nobody sent me to do so. President Tinubu did not ask me to do so as speculated. I didn’t speak to anybody on my intention to testify,” Obasanjo said.
He explained that his decision was prompted by statements made by Olu Agunloye regarding the matter, which he described as “atrocious.” “I considered it necessary to set the records straight,” he added.
While Agunloye is facing fraud allegations in Nigeria, the arbitration involves a dispute between the Federal Government and Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited over a breach of agreement in the Mambilla Power Project. Sunrise Power is seeking $2.3 billion in compensation for the alleged breach.
