In one of his first actions as President, Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order affirming the recognition of only two genders – male and female – in official U.S. government policies and documents.
President Trump stated that his administration is committed to defending women’s rights and safeguarding freedom of conscience through the use of “clear and accurate language” that acknowledges biological differences between men and women.
He declared, “It is the policy of the United States to recognise two sexes – male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”
The executive order mandates that official government documents, such as passports and visas, will now only recognise male and female as the valid gender options.
The order further stated, “The erasure of sex in language and policy has a corrosive impact not just on women but on the validity of the entire American system.”
However, concerns have been raised about the potential challenges to implementing this directive. Legal analysts suggest that transgender individuals may seek legal protection through the courts, raising questions about the practical enforcement of the order.
The development has sparked discussions across various quarters, with many anticipating debates on its implications for gender rights in the United States.
