INEC Proposes N126 Billion for 2025 Budget, Seeks Legislative Support

Prof. Yakubu urged the lawmakers to approve the proposed budget, which is nearly three times the amount allocated to the commission last year, citing the critical nature of INEC’s constitutional responsibilities.

“Our proposal for 2025 stands at ₦126 billion. We seek the support of the National Assembly to ensure that INEC is adequately funded to effectively discharge its constitutional and statutory duties,” he stated.

Rising Costs of Elections

The INEC Chairman expressed concerns about the escalating costs of conducting elections in Nigeria, describing the financial burden as exorbitant. He noted that despite being one of the country’s largest employers, INEC operated on a reduced budget of ₦40 billion in 2024, far below the ₦80 billion initially requested.

Prof. Yakubu emphasized that the shortfall has strained the commission’s capacity to perform its functions efficiently.

Call for Collaboration

To address the financial and operational challenges, Prof. Yakubu proposed a collaborative retreat between INEC and the National Assembly. He suggested this platform would enable both parties to discuss pressing issues, exchange ideas, and devise practical solutions to improve the electoral process.

“We need a major conversation. The commission cannot continue conducting elections all year round,” he said, underscoring the need for a more sustainable electoral framework.

The plea comes as INEC prepares for increased responsibilities in the coming year, with its focus on strengthening Nigeria’s electoral processes and infrastructure.
