Tinubu Celebrates Reopening of Warri Refinery

The development follows the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)’s recent restoration of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery.

A Step Toward Energy Independence

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu hailed the reopening of WRPC, which now operates at 60% capacity, as another achievement in 2024. The refinery’s capacity allows for the production of critical products, including:

Straight Run Kerosene (SRK)

Automotive Gas Oil (AGO)

Light and Heavy Naphtha

Tinubu reiterated his administration’s determination to position Nigeria as a hub for downstream industrial activities in Africa.

Praise for NNPCL Leadership

President Tinubu commended the efforts of NNPCL’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, and his team for restoring the refinery after years of inactivity, describing their work as critical to reviving Nigeria’s pride as a major oil producer.

He also acknowledged the groundwork laid by the APC-led administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of the country’s four refineries.

Next Steps for Refinery Rehabilitation

President Tinubu directed NNPCL to expedite repair work on:

Kaduna Refinery

The 150,000 bpd second refinery in Port Harcourt

This aligns with his administration’s comprehensive plan to ensure energy efficiency, security, and economic transformation.

A Message of Hope

Expressing joy over the latest achievement, President Tinubu said:

“This development strengthens the hope and confidence of Nigerians in a brighter future. It also underscores our commitment to delivering on our promises for a better and prosperous Nigeria.”

The restoration of WRPC marks a significant step toward reducing reliance on imported petroleum products and establishing Nigeria as a major player in the global energy sector.
