Airstrike Claims 10 Lives in Sokoto Communities

The council chairman, Hon. Abubakar Gitta Rana, confirmed the casualties and loss of livestock, describing the attack as a tragic mistake that targeted innocent villagers. According to reports, the airstrike was part of a military operation aimed at neutralizing bandits in the region.

However, the Joint Task Force (JTF) North West, Operation Fasan Yamma, defended the operation, stating that the jets targeted Lakurawa terrorists. In a statement by Lt. Col. Abdullahi Abubakar, the military denied hitting civilian structures and warned against misinformation allegedly spread by terrorist sympathizers.

In response to the tragedy, Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu visited the affected communities alongside APC leader Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko and Minister of Labour Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi. The governor attended the funeral prayers for the victims and extended condolences to their families.

“This unfortunate incident occurred during an operation intended to eliminate criminal groups. A thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure such errors are not repeated,” Governor Aliyu assured.

The state government has announced a ₦20 million relief package and 100 bags of foodstuffs to support the affected families. Additionally, medical bills for those injured in the attack will be fully covered.

Authorities have pledged to work towards avoiding future incidents while addressing the security challenges in the region.
