The Federal Government has launched a free train service across Nigeria as part of efforts to ease financial strain and provide relief to citizens during the yuletide season. The free service, which runs from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, aims to facilitate travel for Nigerians during the festive period.
Acting Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr. Ben Iloanusi, disclosed at the Kubwa train station in Abuja that the Corporation projects to transport over 340,000 passengers during the initiative. The first train departed Abuja for Rigasa, Kaduna State, on Friday.
“This free train ride is a palliative introduced by the Federal Government to support Nigerians during this season. We are committed to ensuring its success,” Iloanusi stated.
Security and Booking Process
To ensure safety and orderliness, security has been reinforced at train stations. Passengers are required to book tickets online at no cost and provide valid identification, such as a National Identification Number (NIN), international passport, or driver’s license, before boarding.
For passengers unable to secure tickets online, NRC staff will profile them at the stations. Iloanusi emphasized the importance of arriving at stations at least 45 minutes before departure to facilitate a seamless process.
The initiative covers several major routes, including Abuja-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, Port Harcourt-Aba, Lagos-Mass Transit, and Warri-Itakpe.
Crowd Control and Security Enhancements
To manage crowds, passengers are restricted from booking more than two tickets at a time. “We’ve deployed extra security personnel and measures to maintain order at the stations,” Iloanusi noted. He also urged passengers to cooperate by queuing and following the rules.
Passenger Reactions
While many passengers applauded the initiative, some raised concerns. Public servant Isah Slaisu, who traveled from Rigasa, commended the government for the gesture but highlighted issues of disorderliness.
Maria Balogun, another passenger, criticized the online booking process, alleging deliberate sabotage by staff and calling for the payment option to be reinstated if the free process remained chaotic. She also reported that the rush to board had caused damage to station infrastructure.
NRC Response
Responding to the complaints, Iloanusi acknowledged the challenges and assured passengers that the Corporation is working to address them. “We will improve the booking system and enhance crowd management to ensure the success of this initiative,” he promised.
The Federal Government’s free train service underscores its commitment to alleviating the burden on Nigerians during the festive season while promoting safe and affordable travel.
