Environment Commissioner Berates Assault On Health Officers In Ekiti

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko Ajisafe, has condemned the assault on Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) during a routine sanitary inspection in the Igbayilola area of Ado Ekiti.

Erelu Aluko Ajisafe stated that the officers, who were carrying out their duties to ensure compliance with environmental health regulations, were confronted and harassed by some residents, leading to a tense and potentially dangerous situation.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of respecting EHOs who are performing essential public health services. “It is unacceptable for any individual or group to interfere with or obstruct our officers in the line of duty. These officers are working to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all residents,” she stated.

In response to the incident, the commissioner explained that the offenders have been identified and sanctioned, adding that the penalties were in line with the severity of the offense. “We will not tolerate any form of violence or intimidation against our officers. Appropriate legal actions have been taken to address this misconduct and to deter future occurrences,” Aluko Ajisafe added.

She also highlighted the need for greater community awareness and cooperation with environmental health initiatives. “A safe and clean environment is a collective responsibility. I urge all residents to support the efforts of our EHOs and to report any incidents of non-compliance they observe,” she said.

Residents of Igbayilola and  Ekiti  state at large are therefore  reminded of the importance of adhering to environmental health regulations and supporting the efforts of those who enforce them, as these measures are crucial for the well-being and safety of the entire population.
