By Teniola Blessing.

The Permanent Secretary Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Babatunde Jegede, has warned the staff of Ekiti State local government service against acts of indiscipline which are capable of affecting the image of the service.

The PS gave the warning at a meeting held with heads of local government administration/local council development areas and NULGE leadership.

According to him, lateness to work, absenteeism, truancy, partisan politics, abuse of the freedom of information to disparage the service and sundry acts of indiscipline would henceforth attract sanctions in line with the provisions of the Public Service Rules and Local Government Staff Regulations.

Mr. Jegede, emphasized that public servants should remain anonymous by being seen and not heard in the discharge of their duties noting that the rate at which public servants engage in issuing statements on service matters without clearance and authorization was alarming. He disclosed that deliberate efforts were being made to reposition the service for higher productivity as well as reward hard work.

The PS who affirmed his determination to change the narratives in the service, added “all hands must be on deck to ensure the success of the Administration of Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO), governor of Ekiti State as captured in the 6-Point Agenda” He advised the staff to always use their free time to develop themselves instead of loitering and gossiping.

He directed that a monthly report of the activities of each local government and local council development area should henceforth be submitted to the Local Government Service Commission in order to chart a new course for the local government service in the areas of service delivery and a disciplined workforce.

In her contribution, Mrs Toba Ojo, Executive Secretary, stressed the needs to put in place, internal control mechanisms to check acts of indiscipline pledging the cooperation of the leadership of the service to the PS.

Responding on behalf of the workforce, Comrade Oluseyi Babatunde, NULGE president gave assurance that the union would not intercede on behalf of any erring staff stressing that a disciplined workforce is critical to the attainment of an organisation’s goals. He was represented at the meeting by the Deputy President, Comrade Idowu Adejugbe.
