Popular Gospel Artiste, 3 Others Found Dead in Lagos Studio

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command said investigations have begun to determine the cause of death, noting that no visible signs of violence were found on the bodies.

Police sources disclosed that the deceased included a popular gospel singer, Matthew Ogundele, alongside three members of his team identified as Joseph Sanya, Itunu Ogundele and a blogger known as Matthew Awosanya, also called JoesTv.

Information gathered indicated that the artistes had performed at a birthday praise programme and decided to remain overnight at the studio after the event ended late.

Further findings revealed that the invitation was part of a three-day birthday praise organised by a female gospel artiste, Olanireti Akinbola, with the second-day session held on Tuesday, February 3.

Security sources explained that the performance extended into the night, prompting the crew to sleep at the studio, where they were later found unresponsive the next morning.

Meanwhile, anger and suspicion have spread among residents and colleagues of the deceased, with many taking to social media to demand a thorough investigation and justice.

Images circulating online allegedly showing blood stains around the noses, ears and mouths of the victims have heightened public concern and speculation, despite police assurances.

Reacting officially, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the case was reported on Wednesday, February 4, by the studio owner, Akintayo Akinbola.

She stated that Akintayo explained he left the artistes at his studio inside the HFP Shopping Complex on Tuesday night after providing food for them before heading home.

According to the police, Akintayo returned around 11am the next day and discovered the studio door locked from the inside, prompting him to seek help to force it open.

Adebisi said officers who visited the scene documented the environment and confirmed that there were no visible injuries on the bodies, adding that detectives are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The tragic deaths have raised serious questions about safety and emergency response in private studios and event spaces. Beyond public emotions and speculation, a transparent and professional investigation is crucial to restore confidence and provide closure to grieving families and the gospel music community.
