Environment Commissioner Urges Ekiti Residents To Remain Calm, Take Precautions        … as NIMET predicts thunderstorms

This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Ajisafe Aluko, in Ado Ekiti, the State capital.

The statement emphasized that thunderstorms are localized weather events caused by intense heating of near-ground air, leading it to rise and form cumulus clouds. These clouds accumulate electrical charges, ultimately resulting in lightning and thunder.

While the Ministry acknowledged the potential dangers associated with thunderstorms, the statement  also emphasized the need to avoid  panic and take the necessary precautionary measures by staying indoors and wait for the storm to pass before going outside. Minimize electrical hazards by turning off and unplug electrical appliances to avoid damage from power surges.

Others include staying away from windows and avoid using mirrors or other reflective objects. Do not light gas appliances or use open flames during a thunderstorm. Maintain a safe posture, avoid lying flat on the ground. Keep a safe distance from electric wires, poles and other conductors. Avoid using your phone during a thunderstorm as metal can attract lightning.

The statement assured the residents that if these measures are strictly adhered to, that Ekiti stands the chance of recording little or no casualties as predicted by NIMET.
