Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing worsening internal crises and unresolved leadership issues within the party.
In a letter dated June 27 and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Otukpo Ward 1 in Benue State, Mark said the party had become a shadow of its former self, due to deep divisions and persistent internal conflicts.
“I bring warm greetings to you and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otukpo Ward 1, and by extension, to the entire Benue State and Nigeria. I write to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the party with immediate effect,” the letter read in part.
Senator Mark noted that despite remaining loyal to the PDP even after its loss in the 2015 presidential election, the current state of the party had made it impossible for him to continue.
“You may recall that over the years, I have remained firm and deeply committed to the ideals of the PDP. Even when nearly all stakeholders departed the party following our loss in the 2015 presidential election, I pledged to remain the last man standing,” he wrote.
He explained that while he had made significant efforts to reconcile and rebuild the party, recent developments had eroded its foundation.
“However, recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences have reduced the party to a shadow of its former self, subjecting it to public ridicule,” he added.
Senator Mark disclosed that after consultations with his family, close associates, and political allies, he had resolved to join the emerging National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria.
He said the decision was part of a broader plan to help rescue Nigeria’s democracy and offer a new political alternative.
“After wide consultations with my family, friends, and political associates, I have resolved to join the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, as part of the collective effort to rescue our nation and preserve our hard-earned democracy,” he concluded.
It will be recalled that Senator David Mark and former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, have been announced as interim National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, of the yet-to-be-unveiled ADC coalition platform.
