At least 20 American mercenaries fighting on the side of Ukraine have been reported missing in combat, as the number of foreign casualties in the ongoing war continues to rise.
According to an investigation by CNN, the past six months have seen a sharp increase in the deaths of foreign fighters on the Ukrainian front lines. The report revealed that many of these mercenaries had joined the war to fill the gaps in Ukraine’s defence, but the risks have proven to be extremely high.
It was further disclosed that the bodies of at least five Americans killed in action could not be recovered from the battlefield. However, the remains of two U.S. citizens were successfully transferred to Ukraine last Friday.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry has repeatedly accused Ukraine of recruiting foreign mercenaries to strengthen its forces. Some of these fighters, in various interviews, admitted that the Ukrainian military lacked proper coordination, making survival even more challenging.
They also described the intensity of combat in Ukraine as far worse than what they had previously experienced in war zones like Afghanistan and the Middle East.
